The Silver Arowana is a large, predatory freshwater fish known for its sleek, silver body and powerful jumping ability. It has a distinct elongated shape and large, upturned mouth, allowing it to catch prey at the water’s surface. This species is highly sought after by aquarium enthusiasts due to its beauty and graceful swimming. However, it requires a spacious tank and experienced care to thrive.
Origin:
Native to the freshwater rivers, floodplains, and lakes of the Amazon Basin in South America.
Temperature:
Thrives in water temperatures of 24–30°C.
Feeding:
Carnivorous diet including live or frozen fish, shrimp, insects, and high-quality carnivore pellets. Occasional supplementation with fruits can be beneficial.
Water Quality:
Prefers a pH range of 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (1–8 dGH).
Ideal Aquarium Size:
Requires a tank of at least 750 liters with a secure lid, as it is known to jump. Needs strong filtration and open swimming space.
Lifespan:
Can live up to 15 years with proper care.
Community Tank Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive and best kept with other large, robust fish such as stingrays, large catfish, or other predatory species. Avoid small or slow-moving tank mates.
Breeding:
Difficult to breed in captivity. It is a mouthbrooding species where the male carries the eggs and fry in his mouth. Requires a very large tank or pond and stable water conditions to encourage spawning.
