A large predatory cichlid found throughout much of Central America, the Jaguar or Aztec Cichlid has been popular in the aquarium hobby for decades due to its impressive size, elaborate pattern, and outgoing personality. Aggressive and territorial even from a small size, they should only be kept with similarly sized tankmates or large dither fish like silver dollar species, large characins, or larger barbs. In the aquarium, they are extremely hardy and will thrive in a wide variety of water conditions but due to their large size require a very large aquarium as adults.
