Cuban cichlids are a very large and aggressive species from the island of Cuba. While juveniles can be rather plain with mostly brown and gray coloration, adults show a much more eye catching marble pattern of white and black. In the right lighting, the white sections of this fish can appear to be blue or green in color. Due to their size and territorial behavior, they should only be kept in large aquariums of at least 100 gallons with similarly sized, robust species or as a pair with large and fast dithers such as silver dollars. Pairs form naturally as they mature, and spawns can number from anywhere from 50 to 400 eggs at once. This high reproductive rate and their striking coloration makes them excellent for a breeding project if one wants to work with impressively sized cichlids.
